Kathmandu, Nepal: Uma Regmi has been elected as the president of the Nepal Women Association (NWA), a sister wing of the Nepali Congress (NC).
In the election held on late night on Friday, Uma secured 998 votes out of total 1,814 cast, while her contender candidate Mina Pandey just got 796 votes.
The joint panel, of leaders loyal to party President Sher Bahadur Deuba and leader Krishna Prasad Sitaula, led by Uma won the election in all the positions.
From the Uma led panel, Dhana Khatiwoda has been elected as the General Secretar with 968 votes. The contender candidate of Khatiwada from the Pandey led panel, Goma KC, secured just 776 votes.
Pandey led panel was backed by the Nepali Congress’s senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel. Party president Deuba and influential leader Sitaula had agreed to make an alliance in the election.
The Deuba-Sitaula panel has secured wins in all 55 positions. It is said that 33 of them are close to party president Deuba while remaining 23 are close to Sitaula.
