Kathmandu, Nepal, June 16, 2023. Out of the 18 defendants taken in judicial custody in the Bhutanese refugee case, 16 defendants have been ordered to be detained by the Kathmandu District Court, while 2 defendants have been released on bail.
Following the order of the court, 16 defendants including former Deputy Prime Minister Top Bahadur Rayamazhi, former Home Minister Balkrishna Khan, and former Secretary of the Government of Nepal Teknarayan Pandey have been sent to jail while two defendants- Lakshmi Maharjan and Tank Gurung have been ordered to be released on a bail of 5 lakhs and 10 lakhs respectively.
District Court Kathmandu Judge Prem Prasad Neupane made the order to conclude the hearing in the case on Friday. Nepal police had filed a case against 30 defendants for running a fraud business of sending Nepali citizens to the United States by turning them into Bhutanese refugees.
Those sent in the jail include Indrajit Rai, Teknath Rizal, Keshav Dulal, Sanu Bhandari, Angtawa Sherpa, Shamsher Mia, Sandeep Rayamazhi, Sandesh Sharma, Sagar Rai, Ramsharan KC, Narendra KC, Govind Chaudhary and Haribhakt Maharjan incluing Rayamazhi, Khan and Pandey.
Similarly, the absconding defendents include as Keshav Tuladhar, Deepa Humagai, Niraj Rai, Rajesh Aryal, Mohanraj Rai, Niranjan Kumar Kharel, Ashok Pokharel, Dhiren Rai, Ashish Budhathoki, Sunil Budhathoki, Binita Sawden Limbu and Pratik Thapa.
