Political Crisis Deepens as Election Date Approaches

Kathmandu, Nepal, 22 December 2025: Although the date for the House of Representatives election is drawing near, a favorable electoral environment has failed to materialize; instead, the political crisis is deepening.

A group of Gen Z activists has announced a protest against the current government led by Sushila Karki. Ironically, the Karki administration was originally formed on the strength of the Gen Z movement. Similarly, major political parties not only appear suspicious of the government but also seem unwilling to cooperate in creating a conducive environment for the polls.

The situation has escalated further due to CPN (UML) Chairman KP Sharma Oli’s "rock-solid" stance in refusing to provide a statement to the Commission of Inquiry. The party has signaled that if the Commission attempts to proceed with legal action—whether by arrest or other means to force a statement—street protests will be intensified across the country.

During an interview on Himalaya Television’s program Yaksha Prashna on Sunday, Oli reiterated his firm position, stating he had already refused to give a statement multiple times.

"I will not give a statement. If they want to shoot me because I refused, they can. They’ve already decided the verdict before the investigation is even complete, so why should I give a statement? They can imprison me for life for not complying," Oli said during the interview.

These combined factors signal that the likelihood of holding elections on the scheduled date remains slim.
