Guwahati: Assam police has arrested 16 persons for their alleged involvements in the mob lynching of  the two youth artists from Guwahati in the name of child lifters (locally known as Xupadhora) in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district on June 8 evening.

A top police official said that, police has so far arrested 16 persons in the bizarre incident and they are Anuj Timung, Babu Rongpi, Sarukon Swargiary, Biju Basumatary, Biswaram Swargiary, Dhonda Mech, Dhono Mech, Dipjyoti Basumatary, Pantheng Basumatary, Ram Swargiary, Umesh Khaklary, Sanjay Terong, Bidyasingh Rongpi Anand Rongpi, Raju Bey and Bhupendra Terang.

Among the arrested persons, Bhupendra Terang had circulated fake message of child lifters in social media.

Duo had travelled in Abhijit Nath's black Mahindra Scorpio (AS 01 DR 4161) to Karbi Anglong district, stopped at Panijuri area under Dokmoka police station on June 8.

While they had returned from nearby Kangthailangso waterfall on June 8 evening, the villagers suspected them as child lifters and they were brutally beaten to death by a mob.

Meanwhile, the dead bodies of the two youth from Guwahati, 29-year-old Nilotpal Das and 30-year-old Abhijeet Nath were brought to their homes on Sunday night and later taken to the Navagraha crematorium in the city.

Nilotpal Das, a sound engineer and based in Goa, who had come home recently in Guwahati and left for Karbi Anglong for a short vacation with his childhood friend Abhijit Nath, who was a mechanical engineer.

Nilotpal’s father Gopal Chandra Das is a retired railway employee and mother Radhika Das is a retired teacher and they living at Chandangiri area in Guwahati.

On the other hand, 30-year-old Abhijit Nath was a mechanical engineer and his father Ajit Kumar Nath is an Extension Officer of state Agriculture department and mother Shashiprava Deka (Nath) is a retired college teacher and they lived at Chachal area in the city.

Abhijit, who loved nature and was also an active member of Team Humanity, the organisation helped people by donating blood.

Police investigation is going on.
