Kathmandu, Nepal, August 12, 2022: The 'Janai Purnima' which is also known as 'Rishi Tarpani,' a major festival of the Hindu community in Nepal and across the world, is being observed with much more fanfare today.
On the occasion, the ‘tagadharis’ those who wear the 'Janai' (the sacred thread) around their bodies and receive the 'Raksha Bandhan' thread around the wrist. The Newar community used to observer the festival as 'Kwati Purnima.' Kwati, is a delicious food prepared from nine different beans.
The people living in the Terai region used to observe the festival by tying a 'Rakhi' around the wrist. Sisters used to tie the Rakhi around the wrist of their brothers wishing them long life and prosperity.
Hindu devotees have throng in different holey shrine to worship lord Shiva.
