Guwahati : Assam's Hamren police on Friday had arrested seven persons, all likely to be minors on charges of allegedly raping and murdering a 20-year old girl in West Karbi Anglong district on May 10 night.
According to the reports, the accused persons had allegedly raped and murdered the girl while she was returning to her house after attending a cultural programme with a male friend at Tamulguri area near Dalimbari under Baithalangso police station.
Local people on Thursday had found her body hanging from a tree.
Following the incident, police had arrested seven persons including the male friend of the victim on Friday morning.
A top police official said that, we are awaiting for the statement of the victim's male friend and investigation is going on.
Meanwhile, the accused persons had denied their involvement into the incident.
The police official said that, several injury marks have been found in the body of victim girl.
A case has been registered at Baithalangso police station into the rape and murder incident.
Over 10,000 women were raped in Assam in past a decade.
According to the reports of Assam police, 1723 rape cases were registered in the state last year.
