Kathmandu, Nepal, February 14, 2023: The visiting high-level South Korean official in Kathmandu under the leadership of Jang Sung-min, special advisor for political affairs to President Yoon Suk-yeol has reiterated commitment to increase South Korean investment as well as support to Nepal.
Speaking to the media persons, Jang said that his visit marks the beginning of high-level exchange of visits between Republic of Korea and Nepal. Before organizing the press meet, the high level delegation of South Korea met with various authorities in Nepal including Foreign Minister Bimala Rai Poudyal.
I came here in Kathmandu to discuss what can be done to kick-start a new beginning for the next 50 years of Korea-Nepal friendship, Jang said. The two countries are set to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations next year.
Nepal and South Korea had established their diplomatic relations on May 15, 1974. Since then, South Korea has been providing support to Nepal in various areas health, education, local development and technical education.
‘Nepal and South Korea are going to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations next year. Against this backdrop, we have come here to discuss how enhance the economic cooperation between the two countries in the next 50 years,’ Jang said at a press meet.
A high-level team led by Jang arrived in Kathmandu on Sunday with the aim of consolidating the bilateral ties between the two friendly nations and expanding the area of cooperation.
Nepal figures prominently in South Korea’s foreign policy outlook as the two countries share common values such as democracy, freedom, and free market economy, Jang said ‘Korea wants to engage with those countries that aspire to become a free-market economy.’
‘I believe that Nepal's economy will get a boost if we are able to strengthen economic cooperation significantly through government-to-government level as the RoK has become the 10th economic super power in the last 70 years,” Jang said adding as ‘there are many commonalties between Nepal and South Korea. So, the relations between the two countries are getting consolidated through promoting exchanges at the government-to-government and people-to-people levels.’
During the meeting with Foreign Minister Poudyal Jang discussed various areas of bilateral and multilateral cooperation between two nations.
The Jang led South Korean delegation is scheduled to call on Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Tuesday. During the meeting with Prime Minister Dahal, Jang is scheduled to present a blue-print to enhance bilateral ties.
During the press meet, Sung June Park, managing director of Samsung Nepal revealed that Samsung is going to start assembling its LED television sets from early next month. The South Korean multinational giant Samsung has set up a television assembly plant in Nawalparasi in collaboration with Him Electronics of Golchha Group.
The company said that the factory construction is in the final stages and television production will begin from March. It is said that the factor has made a plan to produce as many as 30,000 television sets in 2023 though the capacity of the assembly plant, according to him, is 300,000 sets per year.
