Kathmandu, Nepal, April 5, 2026: A brewing internal revolt within the CPN-UML has escalated into a formal signature campaign demanding a Special General Convention following the party’s disastrous performance in the March 5 general elections. Disgruntled leaders and cadres are invoking Article 73 of the party’s 1949 Statute, which mandates a convention within six months if requested by a majority of delegates or two-thirds of district committees. The dissidents argue that a complete leadership overhaul is the only way to save the party after it was reduced to just nine direct seats—a mere 5.45% of the House—and saw 11 of its 15 candidates in the Kathmandu Valley lose their security deposits.
The movement highlights a widening rift between the aging establishment and a restless youth wing, who have been staging symbolic protests at the party's Chyasal headquarters. These young activists have adopted a unique approach, offering roses to senior leaders to signal a plea for "graceful retirement" while expressing frustration over the sidelined candidacy of Suhang Nembang for parliamentary leadership. The petition for the special session describes the election results as a definitive "vote of no confidence" from the public against the current committee system and top-tier leadership.
Compounding the crisis is a leadership vacuum, as Party Chairman KP Sharma Oli remains in police custody. While some senior officials like Vishnu Paudel and Yogesh Bhattarai have begun publicly debating the need for restructuring, others caution that a transition is difficult while the Chairman is detained. In an attempt at damage control, a marathon six-hour Secretariat meeting on Friday saw the party retract controversial statements by Acting Chairman Ram Bahadur Thapa 'Badal'—who had blamed the army and foreign powers for the loss—and instead issued a formal congratulation to the newly elected Prime Minister, Balendra Shah. Despite these efforts at course correction, the momentum for a Special General Convention continues to grow as the party struggles to redefine its identity in a rapidly shifting political landscape.
