Guwahati, July 28 : At least 10 persons including four police personnel were injured in a clash that broke out between the protesters of minority people in Manipur and police in Manipur’s Jiribam over the Manipur People’s Bill 2018.
According to the reports, All jiribam United Minority Peoples (comprising Bengali and Bengali Muslim community people) have been protesting against the Manipur People’s Bill 2018, which was passed by the Manipur legislative assembly with 1951 as base year.
In view of law and order situation, the Deputy Commissioner of Jiribam district had clamped CrPC 144 in Jiribam district from 7am of Friday, but the protesters violating it.
Protesters of minority people in Manipur had staged protest at Lalpani Bazar area at around 1-30pm on Friday protesting against the bill.
When Manipur police had tried to disperse the agitators, a mob attacked the police personnel by pelting stones and situation turned violent.
The Jiribam police had resorted lathi charge and fired tear gas shells to control the situation.
During the clash six protesters and four police personnel including Superintendent of Police (SP) of Jiribam Nongmaithem Mubi were injured.
The Manipur People’s Bill 2018 seeks to protect the identity of indigenous people of Mnaipur from the influx of outsiders.
Meanwhile, additional security forces have been deployed at various places in Jiribam district.
