14 killed in Baglung jeep accident

Kathmandu, Nepal, Dec 3, 2019: At least fourteen persons killed and three others sustained injures when a passenger jeep met with accident in Baglung district on Tuesday.

According to reports, the ill-fated passenger jeep with registration number Ga 1 Ja 5219 that was in route to Badhighat of the district from Isma of Gulmi district plunged into the Badhigat river killing 14 on the spot. The jeep plunged around 500 meters down from the road. 

All the deceased were members of Karki families from ward 4 of Ishma Rural Municipality of Gulmi district. All the family members and relatives were heading for ward 2 of Nishikhola Rural Municipality in Baglung for ‘Kul Puja’ (ritual worship of clan deity).

It is suspected that overload of the jeep and the inexperience driver in the road section was the reason behind the fatal accident. A total of 26 devotee passengers had boarded the 14-seater jeep from the Badhighat Bajar at early morning. In the time of accident 18 passengers were boarded in the ill-fated jeep as police had forced eight persons including the driver’s help to alight the jeep just few minutes earlier. 

The deceased have been identified Suchana Karki, 30; Resham Thapa, 25; Basundhara Karki, 40; Mamata Thapa, 23; Sita Karki, 40; her two-year-old daughter Anusha Karki; Chhabi Karki, 40; Mahendra Karki, 40; Bhumi Karki, 45; Mina Basnet, 25; and 40-year-old Dhana Bahadur Karki, Muma Karki, 60, Laxmi KC, 55, Dhana Bahadur Karki, 55 and driver of the jeep.

Seriously injured three passengers- Jeevan Karki, 22, Himal Karki and Nima KC were airlifted to Kathmandu. They are being treated at the TU Teaching Hospital.
