KATHMANDU, February 1, 2026 — As political and social tensions continue to escalate in Iran, the Government of Nepal has urged its citizens to remain vigilant and avoid all non-essential travel to the country. In a special travel advisory issued today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) stated that the security situation in Iran has become increasingly volatile. Consequently, the government has requested that Nepali nationals planning to visit Iran postpone their travel until further notice. Those currently residing in the country for employment or other reasons are advised to return home if possible or relocate to safer areas using secure means of transport.

For Nepali nationals who must remain in Iran, the Ministry has called for extreme caution, advising citizens to strictly stay away from protest sites, crowded public spaces, and sensitive installations. Travelers and residents are further encouraged to follow updates issued by local authorities closely, carry essential identification and travel documents at all times, and maintain a state of readiness for potential emergencies. The advisory comes amid reports of nationwide protests and a significant security crackdown, which have led to communication disruptions and unpredictable safety conditions across various cities.

Because Nepal does not maintain a resident embassy in Tehran, diplomatic support and coordination for its citizens are being managed through the Embassy of Nepal in Doha, Qatar. In the event of an emergency or a need for immediate assistance, citizens are encouraged to contact the Doha embassy or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kathmandu directly.

The advisory follows a wave of nationwide unrest that has gripped Iran since late December, sparked by severe economic hardships, including hyperinflation and high unemployment. International media reports indicate that several demonstrations have turned violent, resulting in clashes with security forces and significant casualties. The Government of Nepal noted that this advisory is a precautionary step aimed at ensuring the safety of its citizens amidst the broader security risks currently affecting the Middle East region.
