Washington, DC — The Nepali Embassy in the United States has urged Nepali nationals across the country to exercise extreme caution in complying with US immigration regulations, warning that even minor violations could jeopardize their visas or green cards.
Public Benefit Scrutiny
In a recent advisory, the embassy stated that the misuse of government-funded benefits reserved for US citizens—such as subsidized healthcare, housing assistance, family welfare programs, or educational support—could lead to serious consequences. These include visa cancellation or the loss of permanent residency.
This warning follows reports that US authorities are more closely monitoring the use of public services by non-citizens. Citing 2024 arrival data, the embassy noted that Nepali nationals were among those more frequently flagged for accessing subsidized services, prompting immigration officials to increase scrutiny of visa compliance.
Immigrant Visas Temporarily Halted
In a significant development, the United States has temporarily suspended the issuance of immigrant visas for Nepali citizens. Officials have linked this decision to concerns over compliance with immigration laws and public-benefit regulations.
New Financial Requirements for Visitors
Additionally, Nepalis planning to visit the United States on B1/B2 (business or tourist) visas may soon face a new financial hurdle. Starting January 21, 2026, certain applicants may be required to post a visa bond ranging from $5,000 to $15,000.
According to the embassy, this measure targets countries with high rates of visa overstays or unauthorized employment. US authorities indicated that repeated violations have necessitated these stricter protocols.

US officials have warned that continued violations could lead to even more restrictive visa policies, further complicating travel or settlement for citizens of affected countries.
