Kathmandu, Nepal, January 29,2026: President Ram Chandra Paudel is set to travel to Japan from February 1 to 4 to participate in celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Nepal and Japan, the Government of Nepal announced.
The Cabinet has approved the four-day visit, during which President Paudel will lead a high-level delegation to commemorate seven decades of friendship since the two nations officially established diplomatic relations on September 1, 1956.
This marks President Paudel’s first state visit to Japan since taking office in March 2023. During his stay, he is expected to meet with senior Japanese officials and participate in anniversary events aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation. He is also scheduled to pay a courtesy call on Emperor Naruhito at the Tokyo Imperial Palace.
Nepal and Japan share one of the region's longest-standing diplomatic relationships. Over the years, Japan has remained a major development partner, providing support in infrastructure, technical assistance, and human resource development. The two nations also maintain strong people-to-people ties, bolstered by a large Nepali diaspora in Japan and active cultural exchanges.
Media reports indicate that the anniversary celebrations will include cultural programs and events aimed at boosting collaboration in education, economic development, and trade.
While no major agreements are expected to be signed, officials say the trip will highlight the importance of the partnership between Kathmandu and Tokyo and reaffirm the enduring friendship between the two nations.
