Supreme Court orders government to release former CIAA chief Basnyat on bail from judicial custody

Kathmandu, Nepal, May 7, 2021: The Supreme Court (SC), the apex court of the country, has on Friday ordered the government release Deep Basnyat, former Chief Commissioner of Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA), who is also the former secretary of the Nepal government, on bail. 

Responding to the habeas corpus writ petition filed by Basnyat himself at the apex court on April 30, a division bench of Justices Ishwar Khatiwada and Ananda Mohan Bhattarai ordered the government to release him on Rs 500,000 bail.  

Basnyat has been kept at judicial custody since December 14, 2020 after Special Court ordered the government authorities to keep him in judicial custody until the final verdict is passed on the graft case filed by the CIAA for his alleged involvement in the Lalilta Niwas land scam. CIAA had filed the graft case against 175 individuals including Basnyat for their alleged involvement for transforming the public land into private one. 

Basnyat had filed a habeas corpus petition at the apex court demanding release in bail on a humanitarian ground as he was already 69 years old with ailments related to the heart and currently suffering from COVID-19 as well
