Kathmandu, Nepal, September 1, 2025: Notwithstanding the widespread controversies, the installation of embossed vehicle number plate (EVNP) on vehicles is made mandatory and binding by the government of Nepal.

The government has even warned to implement the decision or face immediate fines. The Department of Transport Management (DoTM), the governmental department responsible to manage the transportation in Nepal has made clear through a public notice that the government’s decision to install EVNP must be implemented immediately to avert the punishment even making clear that it will not retreat from its decision.

The policy to install the EVNP has been dragged into controversies for high fees and the absence of Nepali language on the number plates. Transport associations and civil society groups have been protesting even staging demonstrations against what they call an expensive and insensitive policy.

According to the Department the embossed plates will be compulsorily issued from 21 provincial transport offices.

The government has fixed the rate as Rs. 2,500 for two-wheelers, Rs. 2,900 for three-wheelers, Rs. 3,200 for four-wheelers, and Rs. 3,600 for heavy vehicles.
