KATHMANDU : The U.S. Embassy in Nepal has officially launched its "Freedom 250" campaign, a year-long initiative dedicated to celebrating the 250th anniversary of American independence. Inaugurated by Chargé d’Affaires Scott Urbom at the American Center in Kathmandu, the campaign serves as a milestone reflection on freedom, democracy, innovation, and creativity. During the launch event, where he met with members of the Nepal–U.S. Alumni Network (NUSAN), Urbom emphasized that the initiative honors America’s historical journey since 1776 while reaffirming the democratic values that continue to inspire global communities.
The campaign will be executed across all seven American Spaces in Nepal through a strategic partnership with NUSAN. As the primary implementation partner, the alumni network—which includes former participants of various U.S. government-sponsored exchange programs—will coordinate an extensive series of events nationwide. These activities are designed to foster deep engagement with the public through panel discussions on democratic governance, historical exhibitions, and youth-focused innovation challenges. Organizers also plan to host film screenings and interactive workshops aimed at promoting dialogue on essential themes such as freedom of expression, civic responsibility, and entrepreneurship.
This initiative further cements the bilateral relationship between Nepal and the United States, a partnership that has flourished for over 70 years. Beyond formal diplomacy, the campaign highlights the robust people-to-people connections built through educational exchanges and development programs. American Spaces throughout Nepal will act as central hubs for these celebrations, encouraging youth to participate in conversations about global citizenship and shared democratic ideals.
As the United States approaches its Semiquincentennial on July 4, 2026, the Freedom 250 campaign in Nepal joins a global movement of commemorative events. By bridging historical reflection with contemporary issues, the embassy seeks to engage students, civil society, and the general public in a meaningful dialogue.
