Kathmandu, Nepal, November 10, 2020: Bandana Rana has been re-elected to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) for the second term. Currently she has also been serving as the Vice-chair of the CEDAW committee.
In the elections held during the 21st Meeting of the States Parties to the Convention on CEDAW in New York on Monday, Rana was elected garnering 137 votes, which was the third-highest among 19 candidates contesting the election.
Apart from Rana from Nepal, eleven candidates from Australia, France, Netherlands, Bahamas, Lithuania, Ghana, Mexico, Lebanon, Philippines and China were elected for the 2021-2024 term.
The CEDAW is a UN Human Rights Treaty Body consisting of 23 independent experts elected by the States Parties to the Convention.
