Guwahati, August 2 : Former union minister and veteran Congress leader Santosh Mohan Dev on Wednesday morning died at a private hospital in Silchar following a prolonged illness. 
 
He was 83 and is survived his former legislator wife Bithika Dev and four daughters including present Congress MP Sushmita Dev. 
 
Family members said that, he was ailing since long period and was admitted at a private hospital on July 26 last and breathed his last at around 6-06 am on Wednesday at the hospital. 
 
One time heavyweight Congress leader, Santosh Mohan Dev was the union minister for heavy industries and public enterprises in first UPA government. 
 
He was elected to Lok Sabha for seven times since 1980 including five times Silchar Lok Sabha constituency and two from Tripura. 
 
Meanwhile, Assam Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Congress leaders of Assam and several organisations had condoled on demise of the veteran political leader.
