Kathmandu, Nepal, January 29,2026:International Monetary Fund (IMF) has launched a study to better understand the weaknesses and potential risks within Nepal’s governance system. This move is viewed as part of the IMF’s ongoing support to help Nepal strengthen its economic stability and improve public institutions.
As part of the assessment process, an IMF technical team visited Kathmandu from January 12 to 21, holding discussions with government officials, regulators, development partners, and other relevant stakeholders. During the visit, the team examined the management of public finances and reviewed the country’s existing anti-corruption laws.
The IMF stated that the study focuses on identifying gaps in governance practices and areas where reforms are urgently needed. Based on its findings, the Fund will prepare a detailed diagnostic report along with an action plan that outlines key reform priorities.
According to various media reports, these recommendations are expected to support Nepal’s ongoing economic reform efforts. Furthermore, they are likely to enhance transparency, accountability, and fiscal discipline, while guiding future policy decisions and cooperation with international partners.
