Kathmandu, Nepal: Martyrs Day observed across the country by paying tributes and respects to those who sacrificed their lives for the sake of the country and people during different periods.

The Martyrs Day used to observe every year in Nepal on Magh 16 commemorating to the freedom fighters Shukra Raj Shastri, Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Dashrath Chand and Gangalal Shrestha.

The four Martyrs were executed by the autocratic Rana rulers for raising voice for people's rights during the period from Magh 10-16 in 1997 BS. However, the numbers of martyrs have reached about 7000 as those people who had lost their lives in various movements are also listed as the martyrs.

Nepal celebrates a martyr week from Magh 10-16 as Shukraraj Sharma was hanged from a tree near Pachali of Teku on Magh 10, Dharma Bhakta was hanged in Sifal on Magh 13 and Dashrath Chand and Gangalal were gunned down at Shobha Bhagawati on Magh 15 by the then autocratic Rana rulers in 1997 BS.

Meanwhile, President Bidya Devi Bhandari and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba have delivered separate message on the occasion of the Martyrs Day. The government has announced public holyday on Tuesday.
