Kathmandu, Nepal: In a clear sign of New Delhi’s intent to keep its neighborhood policy on a steady track, India has named seasoned diplomat Sudhakar Dalela as its next ambassador to Nepal, the Ministry of External Affairs announced on Friday.

Dalela, a 1993-batch Indian Foreign Service officer currently serving as Secretary (Economic Relations) at the ministry, will take charge in Kathmandu shortly, stepping into the role as outgoing envoy Naveen Srivastava completes his tenure.

The appointment brings a familiar hand back to the region. Dalela previously served three years as India’s ambassador to Bhutan and has spent years navigating the delicate dynamics of South Asian diplomacy. For those following neighborhood affairs in New Delhi, he is widely viewed as a pragmatic choice—someone who knows the pulse of cross-border relations inside out.

Much of that comes from his long footprint in the ministry’s Northern Division, the critical desk that oversees ties with Nepal and Bhutan. Dalela ran the division as its Director from 2006 to 2007 and returned to lead it as Joint Secretary between 2016 and 2019, a period marked by significant shifts in India-Nepal engagement on infrastructure and trade.

His career spans key diplomatic centers across the globe. Early postings took him to Tel Aviv, Brasilia, Dhaka, and Geneva, along with a stint as Consul General in Chicago. In Washington, D.C., he served as Minister for Political Affairs from 2011 to 2014 and later returned as Deputy Chief of Mission from 2020 to 2022. He also spent time inside the Prime Minister’s Office as a director handling foreign policy matters from 2009 to 2011.

Beyond political affairs, Dalela carries strong credentials on trade and economic ties. He previously served as Director of Trade Policy in India’s Department of Commerce and held a posting at India’s Permanent Mission to the World Trade Organization in Geneva. In his current role as Secretary, he oversees India’s economic outreach across the Global South, bilateral partnerships in Africa, and engagement with multilateral economic bodies.

His arrival in Kathmandu comes at a pivotal moment, as both countries push to expand cooperation in hydropower, rail connections, and trade transit. With deep institutional memory and a sharp focus on economic delivery, Dalela’s appointment signals New Delhi’s effort to keep momentum strong on ground-level connectivity projects.
