Kathmandu, Nepal, June 15, 2021: Nepal would likely to plunge into a crisis as political actors, particularly those who are in the government, involved in the horse-trading game to clinch in the government. Some politicians’ self-centric attitude has not only fueled frustrations among the people but jeopardized the current political system enshrined by the constitution of Nepal.

The rift between politicians for a hold on power and influence has pushed the country towards uncertainty. Both the federal and provincial governments are struggling to hold on to their power at the time when the House of Representatives (HoR) is dissolved again in the pretext of getting fresh mandate.

Even though the ruling UML is sole responsible for the current debacle, other political parties have also been bickering over internal issues showing utter disregard for democratic principles.

It has been about six years since the country adopted a new constitution that guaranteed Nepal as a federal, democratic republic installing three tiers of governments- one federal government, seven provincial and 753 local. At present, however, both the constitution and federalism are facing a grave danger due to the political actors, particularly those who are in the power.

The current political crisis had emerged after President Bidya Devi Bhandari dissolved the HoR on December 20 last year and announced fresh elections on April 30 and May 10 at the recommendation of Prime Minister Oli. The political situation has been complicated further after the HoR is dissolved at again within five months after five months of its reinstatement.

As the parliamentary politics continue to rife with number games at the time when the country is grappling with shortages of medical supplies due to the raging second wave of the pandemic,  only the critics of the current political system have criticized but also the general public seem frustrated with the current system. .

Even though the Prime Minister KP Oli had got historic opportunity to lead the absolute majority government he did nothing than consolidating his power and position. He is not only alleged of indulging in corruption but manipulating to the state mechanism including the constitutional bodies to ceremonial institutions.

Prime Minister Oli proved one allegation that he can do everything to remain in power by inducting a faction of the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) in the government with deputy prime ministerial portfolio to Rajendra Mahato.

The JSP had agreed to support the government after Prime Minister Oli issued citizenship ordinance, which is outright rejected from the Supreme Court. Even though Oli had vehemently been opposing any amendment to the Citizenship laws, he agreed to introduce ordinance just to save his government.

As Prime Minister Oli’s decisions have failed even to make content to his loyal after he appointed Raghubir Mahaseth as the Deputy Prime Minister with Foreign Affairs ministerial portfolio despite having no experience in the field.

Likewise, appointment of Bishnu Poudel as Deputy Prime Minister continuing him as the Minister of Finance and shacking of 13 other ministers including Ishwar Pokhrel would brew frustration even his own camp would help to dissolve the government soon.
