Gurupurnima used to be observed as the festival of honors to the gurus who imparted Vedic mantras, taught the Gayatri mantra, and initiated followers.
Likewise, today also marks as Vyasa Jayanti. Ved Vyas, who is renowned for composing the 18 Puranas and 18 Upa Puranas.
